WHAT IS A MISDEMEANOR OFFENSE?
By state law, found in Utah Code Annotated § 76-3-104, misdemeanors are categorized into three different classes: Class A, Class B, and Class C. All misdemeanor crimes are punishable by no more than one year in county or local jail. Further classification is as follows:
- Class A misdemeanors - Up to a year in jail and no more than $2,500 in fines (Utah Code Annotated §§ 76-3-204, 76-3-301)
- Class B misdemeanors - Up to 6 months in jail and no more than $1,000 in fines (Utah Code Annotated §§ 76-3-204, 76-3-301)
- Class C misdemeanors - Up to 90 days in jail and no more than $750 in fines (Utah Code Annotated §§ 76-3-204, 76-3-301)
